The Renewing Power of Change

We have all heard someone say, "Some people never change," implying that people are either unwilling or unable to change their ways. This harsh judgment grossly underestimates one's capacity for change. All individuals possess the ability to evolve, for better, for worse, and everything in between.The human body undergoes a complete cellular renewal every seven years, yet we retain our identity. Similarly, the Ship of Theseus, a philosophical thought experiment, illustrates this concept:A ship departs shore with enough wood to build an identical vessel. Gradually, every plank is replaced during the journey. Upon returning to the harbor, is it the same ship or a different one? Is it the same because of its name, appearance, or the crew?Answers to this question are subjective and rarely straightforward. Nowadays, people might say, "You have to ask the ship if it's the same or not." In some ways this is true, as only the individual truly knows if they have changed.A single action does not justify change; rather, a series of thoughts, actions, and altered habits do. The number of repetitions required to form a habit varies, but I define it as the point at which an action becomes automatic. For me, a change was as simple as using my full name instead of my nickname when I moved to a new city and started a new job.Change can relate to self-perception, physical stature, emotional composure, or anything else. If you reconnect with someone after years and they remark on your weight loss, fresh haircut, and newfound demeanor, would you say you've changed? You might always feel connected to your younger self and values, but each passing day refines your understanding and implementation of these values. While you may "not have changed" in a simple sense, your thoughts and actions may have evolved.Theseus' Ship is a thought-provoking question that can empower individuals to break free from negative mindsets. If you can truthfully say you have "changed," you may be able to resist actions that your "former" self might have struggled with. As you progress through self-improvement, you may reach a point where you can say you're not the same person you once were. Though your name may remain the same, it might be the only thing that hasn't changed.
